Taning (as he introduces himself to non-Westerners) or Stanley (to said Westerners) has had a blighted childhood. Born eldest of three children to a middle-middle-class family, he had to endure constant physical and verbal abuse from his drunkard of a father. His mother was a very passive woman, who made only token efforts to prevent the beatings, and was content to sit in a corner and sob silently when she is inevitably shoved away. His brother, a year younger, had always been quiet, and would hide from his brother a lot to avoid drawing his father's wrath onto him instead. His sister though, two years younger, was lively and cheerful, and was never beaten up. Taning and his sister were friends ever since they both understood what it meant to be friends. At age 8, Taning blew up his family. It happened like this: Taning was enduring a routine beating over something inconsequential (he thinks it was when he dropped some change for the suka he bought into an open grate) when his consciousness up and left the material plane. His recollection of his arrival at the astral plane is that of a total blackout. He felt himself standing up and trying to grope his way around when a bolt of lightning struck the ground in front of him. A few seconds later, another bolt struck, and then another, and then another, faster and faster around him, until he was in a veritable cage of lightning. And then, a flash of light, a deafening blast of thunder, and suddenly he was naked but for robes of pure sunfire. In the distance, a tower with a huge key on top loomed, ominous and welcoming at the same time. He found a spear of lightning in his hand, and he used it to beam light upon the path to the tower, which he felt in his bones to be the one place he was sure he needed to go. When he got there, the tower's doors were open and there was, on a dais in the center of the spire, a quill made of light. He knew that he needed to sign his name into the wall, and he did. After that, a long rope with handle of fire unfurled from the top of the tower. Taning knew he needed to pull this rope. He did. The world went white. When he woke up, he was sitting in the center of a crater where his house used to be. He ended up in an orphanage (where he was, at least, well taken care of) until he was sent to the Mage city of New Atlantis at the age of 9. From that age until he turned 16, he trained at the Heartspire, and after the mandatory two years of novitiate, joined the Adamantine Arrows at 18. From then until the age of 27, he toiled as a foot soldier in the ranks, developing a reputation as a fearsome swordsman along the way. (He would swear, later, that he took up the sword because he never wanted to be imprecise again.) He was a passive sort of fellow, however, and never advanced very far in the ranks. He was then sent to the Arrows HQ in the Philippines, because the only person who ever believed in him, his CO, thinks he's worth much, much more than what he's shown so far. He never really distinguished himself at Falner Estate either, though. Until recently. At the age of 33, Taning met Hikaru Shinta, The Blade King, who saw and still sees in him a frightening amount of potential.
